Plenty for Potters to smile about

Sherwood delighted with home win

Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood singled out midfielders Mousa Dembele and Paulinho for praise after watching his side win at home for the first time since October by beating Stoke 3-0.

Tim Sherwood was happy with the performance of Mousa Dembele and Paulinho against Stoke.

There was uncertainty in the stands following a 1-1 draw against West Brom on Boxing Day, while a 5-0 home defeat against Liverpool cost his predecessor Andre Villas-Boas his job.

But Sherwood is hopeful of building on the win, which kept Tottenham just three points behind fourth-placed Everton.

"I thought we played very well from start to finish," Sherwood said. "There were a lot of good performances there and some excellent ones.

"Mousa Dembele was immense and Paulinho before he had to go off injured.

"It's all about winning. We played with that freedom against West Brom, didn't get the result and the crowd went home unhappy.

"It's a fine line with winning games and taking your chances. We didn't take all our chances today, but we did enough to score some goals.

"It's very important to get a home win, we haven't had one since October, so now we have got that off our backs."

Following a summer spending spree by Tottenham, Sherwood hinted that he is unlikely to spend big in January, unless it is as cover for the club’s injury list.

He said: "The ability is there to do it [spend money], if we really need to. The only reason we would look to do it at the moment is because of our crippling injury list.

"What I don't want to do is collect players for three or four weeks and then you end up with them for the rest of the season and two or three years on.

"If boys like [Zeki] Fryers can come in and do a job, then we will go with them."

Jermain Defoe has been linked with a January exit from Tottenham, with MLS side Toronto one possible destination, but Sherwood was tight-lipped on the striker’s future.

He said: "I'm not sure if anything is finalised with Jermain, he is injured at the moment and we just want to get him back fit, whether he is with us for the short term, or the long term."

And the Tottenham boss also refused to be drawn on speculation regarding West Brom forward Shane Long, adding: "I know nothing about that, I haven't seen that."
