Rodgers - Suarez the best in the world

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini claims that his side will be one of 'five or six' teams battling it out for the Premier League crown this season.

Luis Suarez is the best player in the world on current form, according to Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

Macintosh: Deal can bring trophies

The Uruguay international striker, 26, took his total for the season to 19 goals in 12 Premier League appearances by scoring twice in Saturday’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Cardiff.

That came a day after he signed a contract extension that commits him to the current Premier League leaders until 2018.

The form of Suarez, coupled with injury problems for Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, has seen him hailed as the world’s most in-form player by Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

And asked if he agreed with Gerrard’s assessment, Rodgers said: “100 percent. I don’t think there’s any question.

“This is the most competitive league in world football. When you’ve a player performing at the level he’s at, I don’t think many would argue with that.”

Suarez could yet challenge the record for the most Premier League goals by a single player in one season, set at 34 by Newcastle’s Andy Cole in 1993-94 and equalled by Blackburn’s Alan Shearer in 1994-95.

Rodgers added: “He’s been phenomenal in his performance level. At this current time, I don’t think there is anyone else in the world performing as consistently at that level. He’s been brilliant.”
