Sherwood named as new Spurs boss

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the appointment of Tim Sherwood as head coach until the end of next season.

Tim Sherwood led Tottenham to a 3-2 Premier League win against Southampton.

• Fitch: Manager search

Sherwood had been in charge of the team in a caretaker capacity, overseeing a 2-1 defeat to West Ham United in the Capital One Cup and a 3-2 victory over Southampton in the Premier League.

He had expressed a desire to take the job full-time and the news of his appointment was confirmed on the club’s Twitter account on Monday evening.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy told the club’s official website: "We were extremely reluctant to make a change mid-season, but felt we had to do so in the club's best interests.

"We have a great squad and we owe them a head coach who will bring out the best in them and allow them to flourish and enjoy a strong, exciting finish to the season.

"We are in the fortunate position of having within our club a talented coach in Tim Sherwood. We believe Tim has both the knowledge and the drive to take the squad forward."

Sherwood, who played for Spurs from 1999 to 2003 and has been part of the backroom team at White Hart Lane since 2008, takes over from Andre Villas-Boas, who was dismissed after a 5-0 defeat at home to Liverpool.

The 44-year-old’s appointment had earlier been backed by former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp, who told The Sun: "Tim should get the job permanently and work alongside Les Ferdinand. Together, they are old-school Spurs and would do a tremendous job.

"I brought them both back to the club when I was there because they understand the place. They are great coaches and don’t forget Tim was captain of Blackburn when they won the Premier League in 1995.

"Why shouldn’t he get the job -- even though being English will probably go against him?"
