Juve stay five points clear of Roma

Juventus maintained their five-point advantage at the top of Serie A with their ninth win in a row as they secured a 4-1 triumph at Atalanta.

Juventus celebrate after Carlos Tevez put them in front at Atalanta.

Carlos Tevez put the Bianconeri in front in the sixth minute but Maximiliano Moralez became the first player in over seven matches to beat Gianluigi Buffon to bring Atalanta level 10 minutes later.

Paul Pogba restored Juve's lead early in the second half with Fernando Llorente and Arturo Vidal completing the rout which leaves Atalanta four points above the drop zone.

Roma kept the pressure on at the top as they thrashed rock-bottom Catania 4-0.

Mehdi Benatia scored in either half with Mattia Destro and Gervinho also finding the net to give Roma a comfortable win.

Rodrigo Palacio's audacious late goal earned Inter Milan the derby honours as they beat struggling AC Milan 1-0 at the San Siro.

A first goalless draw in this fixture since 2004 had looked on the cards until Palacio cleverly flicked in Fredy Guarin's cross with his heel to put Inter ahead with just four minutes left.

Milan could find no answer to that strike and, as frustrations boiled over late on, they also lost midfielder Sulley Muntari to a red card for barging over Zdravko Kuzmanovic off the ball as they ended the match with 10 men and no points.

The result means Inter were left to celebrate their first league victory in over a month - and first since president Erick Thohir took over the club - and one that lifts them back up to fifth, five points behind Napoli and the final Champions League spots.

Giuseppe Rossi's late strike was enough for Fiorentina to claim a hard-fought 1-0 win over lowly Sassuolo and maintain their push to break into the top three.

Rossi found the net with eight minutes left after a match in which the hosts enjoyed a string of chances, particularly in the first half, but paid for their inability to beat Norberto Neto.

Fiorentina sit fourth, three points behind Napoli -- who could only draw 1-1 at Cagliari on Saturday.

Hellas Verona's impressive run at the Marc'Antonio Bentegodi Stadium continued as they ended the year with a thumping 4-1 victory over Lazio.

Lazio midfielder Lucas Biglia cancelled out Luca Toni's opener in the 27th minute before Juan Iturbe's free-kick put Hellas back in front before half-time.

Hellas goalkeeper Rafael pulled off great saves to deny Lazio an equaliser early in the second half before Romulo made it 3-1 in the 63rd minute.

Toni put the result beyond any doubt when he scored his second of the afternoon 12 minutes from time.

The outcome is Hellas' eighth victory out of nine games at home this season and allowed Andrea Mandorlini's side, who gained promotion to Italy's top flight this summer, to temporarily leapfrog Inter Milan into fifth place until they took the derby spoils later on Sunday.

Torino stormed back from a goal down to defeat Chievo 4-1 and end 2013 on a high.

Cyril Thereau gave the visitors a ninth-minute lead but Ciro Immobile equalised for the hosts before the break.

Immobile scored his second in the 65th minute to put his team in front before late strikes from Giuseppe Vives and Alessio Cerci completed Torino's comeback.

The win, Torino's third straight in Serie A, ensures Giampiero Ventura's side head into the winter break in seventh place. Chievo, meanwhile, will start the new year in 16th position, just two places and one point clear of the relegation zone.

Sampdoria extended their unbeaten run under Sinisa Mihajlovic to five games but had to settle for only a point in a 1-1 draw with Parma.

Eder gave the hosts the lead just before half-time, but Alessandro Lucarelli equalised for Parma, who got on top in the second half, but failed to find a winner.

The draw lifts Samp four points clear of the relegation zone with Parma remaining two points above the Genovese side.

Bologna ended an almost two-month wait for a win in Serie A by beating Genoa 1-0 at the Stadio Dall'Ara.

Alessandro Diamanti scored the only goal of the game in the 57th minute to earn Bologna a deserved victory against a Genoa side who rarely threatened a goal of their own.

The win lifts Bologna out of the bottom three, reducing the arrears on Genoa, who have not now won in their last five, to five points.
