Welbeck targets improved strike rate

Manchester United manager David Moyes was pleased to reach the semi-finals of the English League Cup following a 2-0 win away to Stoke City on Wednesday that was briefly halted due to a hailstorm.

Danny Welbeck has rebuffed David Moyes’ claim that he had be told to practice his shooting after training, insisting that he has been putting in extra work on his finishing for years.

Striker Welbeck accused manager Moyes of not seeing his training ground efforts to improve his goalscoring return.

Moyes, who has been vocal about his belief that Welbeck needs to deliver more goals, said on Tuesday: "We had a word with him about a month ago and we said that he needs to be the last off the training field. Wayne [Rooney] is out there practicing his finishing each day. I said: 'Danny, you need to be out there every day finishing, even if it's 15 minutes at the end.'"

But Welbeck told national newspapers: "I have been doing that ever since I have been at United. I have been injured this season, so maybe the manager has not seen me on the training pitch as much.

"Obviously, at Manchester United I want to be working hard -- and I have been doing that ever since I was a young kid. I just want to keep on getting better and improving. Those extra hours on the training pitch, whether it be with the boys or individually, I am just looking to improve."

Welbeck scored twice in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa, ending a four-month drought in the Premier League.

He has scored five goals for United this season, an improvement on his tally of only two in 40 club games last season.

And he added: "I want some more goals, I can tell you that. I have got a figure in my mind, I want to score plenty more goals."

Welbeck has often been used as a winger and believes that is a reason why he is not more prolific, but he said he feels Robin van Persie’s absence for a month could afford him more opportunities in attack.

He explained: "Obviously, it is not my decision about where I play. As I have said plenty of times before, I am happy to play for Manchester United in any of the attacking positions.

"Unfortunately, Robin has got injured. I might have a chance up front, so I am looking to score some goals for Manchester United whilst playing as a centre-forward."
