Fulham confirm Dempsey loan close

A special look back over the ten biggest transfer deals of 2013.

Fulham have confirmed that Clint Dempsey has undergone a medical at the club ahead of a potential loan move.

Dempsey, 30, spent five-and-a-half years at Craven Cottage between 2007 and 2012, scoring 50 goals and helping the Cottagers to reach the Europa League final in 2010.

The United States international left Fulham in 2012 to join Tottenham before returning to the MLS a year later with Seattle Sounders, and sources had told ESPN that the club were hopeful of sealing his temporary return.

The Premier League side, who recently parted company with manager Martin Jol, have now tweeted that Dempsey would return for January and February, making him available for eight Premier League games including the crucial fixtures against West Ham, Norwich and Sunderland.

Fulham coach Rene Meulensteen said Dempsey's arrival would be a "boost" for the club as they try to climb away from the bottom of the league.

He said: "He’s having a medical and we’re looking into that. It would be a real boost for us. Hopefully that will all work out.

"Clint spent so many years playing in the Premier League and we all know where his strengths are. He can come in from the left or play as a second striker depending on who you’re playing against. It speaks volumes for him that he wants to come back here. Initially it’s for January and February."

Meulensteen also played down the notion that Dempsey's arrival could be the first of many new signings during the January transfer window.

He said: "I don’t think it’s a question of how many in numbers. We know that if we need support from the owner to boost our chances, then that support will come.

"The players here are as good as gold. It’s a good squad with a lot of experience. The players are aware of the situation we’re in and how we can get out of it. They’ve been very supportive to me and I couldn’t ask for anything more.

"The only disappointment in the three games I’ve been in charge of is that we’ve only picked up three points when we could have had five or six. Other than that the players have been fantastic. They’ve started to buy into the way I want to play the game."
