United 'must pay €40m Rakitic clause'

New Sevilla president Jose Castro has said Manchester United -- or any other potential suitors – will have to pay a 40 million euro release clause if they want to sign midfielder Ivan Rakitic.

Ivan Rakitic saw an equaliser controversially disallowed during Sevilla's defeat at the Camp Nou.
Castro says the 40 million euro release clause for Rakitic must be paid.

• Payne: Christmas cheer
• Jolly: Three things

Rakitic has been in outstanding form, and talks to extend his contract, which ends in 18 months, have been ongoing for months without reaching a resolution.

This has led to speculation that interested clubs, thought to include United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid, Lazio and Napoli, could try to sign the Croatia international, 25, in a cut-price deal.

It is possible that a transfer could happen as early as January, with United boss David Moyes keen to strengthen his midfield and Sevilla remaining in deep financial difficulties.

But Castro told Estadio Deportivo that Sevilla would not be rushed into a quick sale and added: “Rakitic has a year and a half left at Sevilla, but we are going to extend his contract.

“If anyone is in a hurry to sign him they already know that his release clause is 40 million euros.”

United have also been linked with two other La Liga playmakers, but Ander Herrera has said he is happy to remain at Athletic Bilbao, while Atletico Madrid youngster Koke has claimed to know nothing about any interest from Old Trafford.
