Sherwood still 'in the frame' at Spurs

Tottenham caretaker manager Tim Sherwood believes he is still "in the frame" to become the club's permanent boss, despite defeat in his first match in charge against West Ham in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals.

It was a different manager, same sense of frustration for Tottenham.
Tim Sherwood remains in charge of Spurs for now.

• Delaney: Three things
• Fitch: Sherwood fails

Sherwood was installed as the early favourite to take over at Tottenham following the departure of Andre Villas-Boas on Monday, yet Wednesday's desperately disappointing loss against struggling West Ham appears to have dented the hopes of the novice coach landing the prestigious post.

Former Spurs and England boss Glenn Hoddle, Ajax manager Frank de Boer and Russia boss Fabio Capello are among the big names being linked with a move to Tottenham, yet Sherwood still hopes he has a chance to get the nod from club chairman Daniel Levy.

"The immediate future is up in the air, that's as much as I know," Sherwood told reporters after he witnessed West Ham score two late goals deny his side a place in the last four of the Capital One Cup.

"I've got to be in the frame, but it's not my decision. I think the chairman and the football club need to make the correct decision and find the manager who's best compatible to take this football club forward.

"It would have to be right for me and right for the football club. There are a lot of big names being bandied about to take this job.

"I'm up for a challenge. I always have been. I'm very opinionated. I know a certain way I need to play. I think I can manage men and deal with them and be honest with them.

"I am employed by this football club and I am doing what I am told. That decision is out of my hands."

Sherwood went on to concede the dressing room he has inherited from Villas-Boas is suffering from a crisis of confidence, as they prepare for a hectic run of fixtures over the Christmas period, starting with a trip to Southampton on Sunday.

"The confidence is low," he admitted. "It takes a battering when you lose a few games, but it's up to whoever's in charge on Sunday and training on Friday to get them prepared.

"If it's me I certainly won't be going in all doom and gloom. You need to lift these guys and we have to go and get a result for the football club.

"This [result] is a major disappointment to the lads in the dressing room. They're absolutely sick in there and so am I. They ran out of a bit of steam [in this game], but I think they are fit enough.

"It's a complete change of mindset of how I've asked them to play. I've asked them to go a little bit more gung ho and up-and-at-em and you need to acclimatise to that."

Sherwood went on to pay tribute to the departed Villas-Boas, claiming the Portuguese tactician did all he could to bring success to the club.

"I think he did a good job at the football club as a whole and I wish him well," added Sherwood. "He's a really nice guy and everyone liked him around the football club. It's the decision the club decided to make and we all have to abide by it."
