Julian Green opts for U19 German team

U.S. team coach Jurgen Klinsmann has not given up hopes on Bayern Munich attacker Julian Green. For now, however, Green has opted to play for the Germany under-19 team.

Green, 18, made his competitive debut for Bayern Munich in late November. The Florida-born Green, eligible to play for both Germany and the U.S., was brought on as a late substitute in Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash at CSKA Moscow.

The Bayern reserves top scorer with 15 goals in 18 appearances also made the squad in Bayern’s 2-0 home victory against Eintracht Braunschweig, and currently is part of the Bayern squad that wants to win the Club World Cup for the first time ever. Green was an unused substitute during Bayern’s 3-0 against the Asian champions Guangzhou Evergrande on Tuesday night.

Julian Green has already made one appearance for the U.S. under-18 team, but since then opted to play for the Germany under-19, for whom he last featured in October 2013. In an interview with Sport Bild, Klinsmann confirmed that Green has for the time being decided to continue playing for Germany.

“We are in talks with him. Right now, he has opted to play for the Germany under-19 team,” Klinsmann said. “We don’t put any stress on him and remain in talks in order to convince him to play for the U.S. someday.”

Klinsmann vowed to not give up on Green.
