Mourinho: Defence the way to go

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho hinted he may change his tactics after his side were tumbled out of the Capital One Cup by Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Chelsea’s 2-1 extra-time defeat against the Premier League’s bottom club left Mourinho pondering how he can find a level of consistency in a team that is struggling to score goals.

However, response to the defeat may not meet with the approval of club chief Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea owner Abramovich is known to crave an attractive brand of football, but Mourinho has suggested he lacks the firepower to promote that kind of ambition after Chelsea lost their sixth game of the campaign.

“Maybe the way to rectify it is not to concede goals,” he told reporters. “Maybe the way is to have a different approach and not to concede goals because when you don’t score enough goals, when you are a very offensive team and you don’t score enough goals to win matches, maybe the right approach is to be more defensive, concede fewer goals and win matches with the few goals we score.

“That’s not what I want because that’s not what we have in mind in the building up of this team. We want this team to play the way we are playing, we want this team to have evolution, but based on the football we are playing at the moment.

“We need to score goals to finish opponents because we feel very comfortable on the pitch. The possession of the ball becomes easy, the creation becomes easy. We had big chances to score goals, but we didn’t score.

“The quality of football we produced is amazing. We never lost a match because we didn’t play or that the opponent was stronger, it’s just we don’t kill opponents and we give them life. Every opponent knows they can score a goal [against us].”

Mourinho’s comments suggest he may adopt a more conservative approach in Monday’s crucial Premier League game against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium, with his frustration that his new Chelsea are not matching his old team of winners evident at Sunderland.

“I’m the manager of this team not the manager of the old team,” he added. “We are not behind the old team, but in front in terms of quality. Still, football is about results and about scoring goals.”
