David Moyes planning to rotate squad

It was almost 12 months to the day since Darren Fletcher made his last Premier League appearance.

David Moyes is preparing to rotate his squad when he takes Manchester United to Stoke in Wednesday’s Capital One Cup quarterfinal.

Januzaj: Moyes will win trophies
Mitten: RVP absence gives Welbeck chance

The United manager was without nine players for Sunday’s 3-0 win at Aston Villa and the match at the Britannia Stadium is the first of six games in the space of 18 days.

Moyes will have to decide whether to give 40-year-old Ryan Giggs, who made his 956th United appearance at Villa Park, a third start in eight days.

Robin van Persie and Michael Carrick are certain to miss the Stoke game but Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling, Marouane Fellaini, Anderson, Nani, Shinji Kagawa and Javier Hernandez were all absent at Villa Park and Moyes hinted that some could be available after being surprised they were ruled out at the weekend.

He said: “We have a squad of players who I believe can all play in any game, so I’ll look at them and see who I think is ready.

“We have a lot of games coming up and we need to use that squad, so I’ll look at this game and see who is best suited, but I think we have fielded a strong side in every game we have played.

“There were a few I expected to play but got injured on Saturday before we travelled down. There is nothing fresh and hopefully I won’t find anything fresh.”

Moyes won the Community Shield in August but is yet to lift a major trophy as a manager and is hoping to end his drought in the Capital One Cup.

He added: “All cup competitions are important to Manchester United. Managers might have some priorities that are more important than others but I’ve tried to win every competition I’ve been involved in and I will definitely do everything I can to win this one.”

Danny Welbeck struck twice at Villa Park on Sunday and Moyes said it is a priority to turn the hard-working forward into a regular scorer.

He said: “We like Danny a lot. He works hard and is one of our own boys, which is really important to the club and to me. I’m determined to get him to the level where he is scoring regularly.”
