Hoddle perfect for Tottenham - Ardiles

Tottenham legend Ossie Ardiles has backed his former teammate Glenn Hoddle to make a return to the White Hart Lane hotseat, following the departure of Andre Villas-Boas on Monday.

• Marcotti: AVB departure
• Brewin: Contenders to replace AVB

Ardiles believes the tactician who was sacked by Tottenham a decade ago is "more mature" than he was during his first stint at the club, and offered a glowing endorsement to the 56-year-old former England boss.

"For me, the man for the job is Glenn Hoddle," Ardiles told talkSPORT.

"I think he is a wonderful manager and he is a lot more mature, more sedated, so I think he will be a wonderful choice.

"He knows everything about the Premier League and Spurs especially. It is a wonderful, wonderful squad if Glenn became the manager. In terms of quality of our players it is absolutely second to none."

Ardiles believes the club made the right decision to dispense with Villas-Boas’ services, after he witnessed Sunday’s 5-0 mauling at the hands of Liverpool.

"It was an incredibly gloomy atmosphere at the club last Sunday," added Ardiles. "It was an incredibly bad result, like everything conspired against him [Villas-Boas]. Defenders not fit, Paulinho sent off, it was a nightmare. A manager lives and dies by results and they have not been good enough. This was not expected.

"There are a lot of candidates to take over, but Glenn would be the choice for me. It is a wonderful job at the end of the day. It is a big squad and a superb squad."

Hoddle has let it be known that he would be eager to return to the club he played for with great distinction between 1975 and 1987, but he has been out of the game since his stint with Wolves ended in 2006.

Former Spurs midfielder and current caretaker manager Tim Sherwood is the bookies frontrunner to land the post despite his glaring lack of touchline experience.
