Moyes: United ready to turn the corner

Manchester United manager David Moyes says he was happy to top Group A on his first full UEFA Champions League experience.

David Moyes insists Manchester United have players with sufficient quality to end their slump and take them back up the table.

• Schmeichel: Clearout needed

United have lost striker Robin van Persie for the next month with a thigh strain but Moyes is still confident his squad is good enough to bring about an improvement in their fortunes.

The Premier League champions are only ninth in the table, 13 points behind leaders Arsenal, after losing their last two games. But manager Moyes believes Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa is a chance to start a revival.

He said: “We see it as an opportunity. We have got a long way to go and we have to try to make sure we only take one game at a time. Football is like that, anyway: we can only take it one game at a time and see what happens later in the season. I can't talk about it now, we're too far away from it but we'll do everything possible to get closer [to the top].”

Moyes accepted United have underachieved in the Premier League so far and said he is not complaining about the criticism of him and his side.

He added: “We want to play well. We've not done as well in the league as we should have done but we're working hard to try to put it right. The quality of players we have got here gives us a chance to do that and hopefully that will be the case.

“There were a lot of games we were expected to win before but this club is expected to win all its games. That's the fact and why, if we lose one or two, things get said. I totally understand that. When I came here, I knew that was the situation. We've got a lot of games coming up where we can pick up points, but what we need to do is not talk about it and make it happen on the field.”
