Sorensen primed for rare Stoke start

Stoke City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen is preparing for his first Premier League appearance in over two years -- because of an injury to Asmir Begovic.

• Whittaker: Stoke bring the noise

Sorensen has been placed on standby by Stoke manager Mark Hughes after Begovic damaged a thigh muscle in training on Tuesday, which could jeopardise his run of 58 successive Premier League appearances.

Hughes believes the next 24 hours will be crucial in whether Bosnia international Begovic will be able to take his place in the starting line up for the visit to face Hull City.

Begovic has been in outstanding form this season and Hughes said: "Asmir is the big worry for us at the moment, because of a knock he has picked up to his thigh on Tuesday.
He has a bit of bleeding in there, so we need to nurse him and then assess him tomorrow to see where he is at.

“It is a bit of a concern because he has been outstanding for us this year, but we will see what happens over the course of the next 24 hours.”

Sorensen is out of contract at the end of the season and is likely to leave Stoke next summer, with England under-21 international Jack Butland expected to step up to a regular first team squad member next season, when he returns from a loan spell with Barnsley.

Despite Sorensen's lack of Premier League action, Hughes has no concerns about the Dane stepping back into the spotlight at the KC Stadium, adding: "If Asmir isn’t ready then I will have no qualms in throwing Thomas into the team.

"He is a top keeper in his own right who has an abundance of experience behind him. He has been and still is a top class goalkeeper, and I am sure that he would relish the chance to come back into the side for a Premier League game."

Jonathan Walters is certain to miss out on a return to his former stamping ground after registering his fifth caution of the campaign during the 3-2 triumph against Chelsea.

That may mean a return to the starting eleven for match-winner Oussama Assaidi, who had started in each of the Potters two previous league fixtures prior to Saturday’s victory against the Blues.
