Bayern Munich reveal MLS All-Stars date

Bayern Munich are set to meet the MLS All-Stars in Portland on Aug. 6, 2014, the club’s CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed.

Bayern, who recently announced their plans to open an office in New York to position themselves at the centre of the ever-growing United States soccer market, revealed last month that they are to tour the North American country in the summer.

And Rummenigge told Bild on Thursday that a date to play the MLS All-Stars in a preseason friendly has now been set in stone. 

“On Aug. 6, 2014 we will play the All-Star game in Portland, and very likely we will spend a week in America in order to present FC Bayern there,” he said.

The extra week spent in the U.S. will likely include further preseason friendlies, according to reports.

Meanwhile, Bayern are set to make their Club World Cup debut this month when they meet either the Asian champions Guangzhou Evergrande or African champions Al Ahly on Dec. 17.

And Rummenigge believes that winning the Club World Cup is crucial for the Bavarians as they seek to continue their rise to the top of world football.

“In Germany, the Club World Cup is currently not rated that highly. But it’s a different story in Asia, Africa or South America,” Rummenigge said.

The Bayern chief went on to recall the time the club last won the Intercontinental Cup -- the Club World Cup’s predecessor -- in 2001.

He said: “I was sat with Franz Beckenbauer for breakfast and he said: ‘It’s unbelievable just how many people have sent me congratulatory texts. It seems to be an important title’.”

Rummenigge added: “The Club World Cup has a worldwide awareness and is very good for the image. We need to internationalise the brand, and a title like the Club World Cup is very helpful for that.

“Currently the brand FC Bayern belongs to the top five in the footballing world. But we have competitors who never rest. Manchester United, Real Madrid, Barcelona -- they also make huge efforts and are also famous the world over.

“We should not only see our competitors in [Borussia] Dortmund, Schalke or [Bayer] Leverkusen, we have to see them in Europe. The competition has become global.”

Rummenigge went on to rule out that the Bundesliga will soon become the best league in the Europe, like some have suggested throughout 2013.

“We will not take over from the Premier League anytime soon,” Rummenigge said.
