Montoya confident of Barcelona stay

Much sought-after Barcelona full-back Martin Montoya says he is “sure” he will sign a new contract to stay at the Catalan club.

Montoya, whose current deal ends in June, has been heavily linked with moves to a host of clubs including Liverpool, Inter Milan, Arsenal, Juventus, Schalke and Bayer Leverkusen and is free to begin talks over a free transfer as soon as next month.

A move had seemed likely, especially after his fellow Blaugrana youngster Cristian Tello suggested last week that he could leave in search of more regular football elsewhere.

But speaking after Barcelona’s 6-1 Champions League rout of Celtic on Wednesday, the La Masia graduate told Al Primer Toque that he saw his future at the Camp Nou.

MArtin Montoya Barcelona vs. Celtic
Martin Montoya's appearance against Celtic was his fifth in six games for Barcelona.

"I have been here many years, and although I just have a few months left on my contract, I am sure I will renew,” Montoya said. “I hope to be here for many more years. I have never said anything else.

“Players always want to play, and if it is not here then it could be somewhere else. But if it can be here, in my lifelong team, that is much better."

Montoya suggested that his recent run of first-team starts, due to first-choice right-back Dani Alves being sidelined with a tricky calf muscle injury, had helped convince him he was an important part of coach Gerardo Martino’s plans.

"I am happy for the opportunities I am getting,” he said. “I played five [it is in fact four] consecutive games, then had a rest at Cartagena, and now another 90 minutes tonight. I am very happy to be out on the pitch, and taking advantage of the chances I get. I can just continue now, training at 100 percent to get more opportunities."
