Rodgers: No UCL deal with Luis Suarez

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hailed the performance of striker Luis Suarez in the 5-1 thrashing of Norwich City.

Brendan Rodgers has insisted there is no agreement in place for Luis Suarez to leave Liverpool if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season.

• Usher: No room for Liverpool slip-up against old friends

Suarez, 26, wanted to leave Anfield in the previous transfer window amid interest from Arsenal, but the Uruguay international ultimately remained at the club.

The forward has been in superb form since returning from his ban for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic, scoring 13 Premier League goals so far.

His displays have helped Liverpool into fourth in the table, and Rodgers is optimistic that Suarez now sees his future with the Reds.

“There never was that agreement before and there never was that this summer,” Rodgers said in The Times. “The contract was what it was. We want him to stay and with his contract running for two-and-a-half years, I am sure there will be something between now and the end of the season to keep him here.

“There will be a number of dependencies on that, but the most important thing is that the player is happy. I didn’t sit in on the conversations, but as I understand it there is no agreement of any kind.”

Asked if he will stay at Liverpool until the end of the season, following talk of renewed interest from Arsenal in January, Suarez said: “Yes, I am happy here and I will stay.

“The most important focus for me is to help Liverpool to get into the top four after being out of the Champions’ League for a long time, and I believe I will help the team to get it.”
