Europa League payments may increase

The European Club Association (ECA) plans to increase the solidarity payments to Europa League participants and national leagues from the Champions League funds, ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said at the side of an ECA meeting in Turin.

Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is unhappy with the way City are approaching their transfer dealings
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge wants the Europa League to be a financial success.

Currently, 6.5% of the Champions League earnings are shared with the national leagues and a further 50 million euros are transferred to the Europa League. In the next European Cup period, from 2015 to 2018, ECA plans to increase the payments to both national leagues and Europa League.

"We want the Europa League to start flying, also financially," ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge told German news wire dpa at the side of an ECA meeting in Turin on Wednesday. "We are ready to increase the solidarity payments in favour of the Europa League and the national leagues," he explained.

Meanwhile, the German Europa League participant Eintracht Frankfurt is facing punishment from UEFA following their recent away trip to Bordeaux.

Some 12,000 Frankfurt fans had travelled to France to witness the Adler secure their berth in the knockout stages of this year’s competition.

While most of the Frankfurt fans impressed, UEFA have opened investigations against the club, German media reports. According to a UEFA report, Frankfurt could face severe punishment for the use of flares and smaller riots in front of the Girodinis stadium.

The German side has already been fined 43,000 euros for their fans behaviour in four Europa League games this season and now expect "a severe punishment," kicker quotes German Football League executive Andreas Rettig.

With Frankfurt already on UEFA’s blacklist, they could face a partial stadium ban in their first game of the knockout stages in early 2014. "That would be a catastrophe," Frankfurt sporting director Bruno Huebner said.

The case will be dealt with by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body meeting on December 11.
