Bayern's Robben facing six weeks out

Arjen Robben is set for a six-week spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury as Bayern Munich beat Augsburg 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal.

• Bayern relaxed over Robben contract

Robben opened the scoring for Bayern after four minutes but 10 minutes later he collided with Augsburg goalkeeper Marvin Hitz, suffering an injury to his knee that left him with a bleeding wound.

Arjen Robben suffered a knee injury on Wednesday night.
Bayern's DFB-Pokal progress was tempered by Arjen Robben's injury.

"I first stopped, because I thought it was offside," Hitz said. "Then I realised that he wanted to play on and I am not too sure whether it was offside or not. I rushed out and because of that I got to him way too late. That's why I hit him like that. I am really sorry."

After tests to determine the extent of the injury, Bayern announced on Thursday that Robben is likely to be sidelined for up to six weeks.

“Arjen Robben has a deep laceration wound, right down to the knee joint. Through one of the studs the thigh bone in his right leg was pushed in, this led to a massive hemorrhage,” Bayern club doctor Dr. Mueller-Wohlfahrt was quoted in the statement from Bayern.

Robben said: “Of course, I am bitterly disappointed. I was in great form, and looking forward to every game with the team. And now this. But I will come back fit and will tackle the goals we have set ourselves as a team.

Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer admitted losing Robben, who has contributed 11 goals and 10 assists in 18 games this season, is a major blow.

“We are awfully sorry that it hit Arjen that hard in Augsburg,” Sammer said. “Arjen has recently been in the form of his life and helped to decide many games. It’s bitter losing him. But he will get any help need and will return for the second half of the season.”
