F.C. Dallas target Schelotto

Guillermo Barros Schelotto is the preferred choice to take over the vacant managerial position at F.C. Dallas multiple sources told ESPNFC.com.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto is rumoured to be the top target for F.C. Dallas.
Guillermo Barros Schelotto is rumoured to be the top target for F.C. Dallas.

But a disagreement over compensation may prevent the Argentine from joining the MLS club.

Dallas has been without a manager ever since Schellas Hyndman announced his resignation with two games left in the regular season, and Schelotto is well known to owners Dan and Clark Hunt. Back in 2008, Schelotto led the Columbus Crew -- then owned by Hunt Sports Group -- to a Supporters Shield and MLS Cup double.

Schelotto is presently managing Argentine side Lanus, where he is in contention for two titles and is under contract until next summer.

Lanus is set to contest the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Brazilian side Ponte Preta, with Wednesday’s first leg having finished 1-1 and the return leg set for next week.

Lanus is also in contention for the 2013 Torneo Inicial title in the Primera Division, trailing leaders San Lorenzo by two points with only one game to play. Lanus will conclude the league campaign on December 15 when it travels to Newell’s Old Boys.

Schelotto has recently been linked to several managerial posts, both in Argentina and in MLS. Published reports indicated that Schelotto interviewed for both the Columbus head coaching job that ultimately went to Gregg Berhalter, and the still vacant post with NYC FC.

There has also been speculation that Boca Juniors, the club where Schelotto spent the vast majority of his career, may try to hire him in the summer, when the contract of current manager Carlos Bianchi expires.

Yet multiple sources told ESPNFC.com that it is Schelotto’s salary demands that could prevent him from joining Dallas. The exact salary amount wasn’t revealed, but it may force the club to look elsewhere.

Brian Bliss, another known quantity to the Hunts from his days as Columbus’ technical director, is known to have interviewed with club prior to the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Other confirmed interviewees are Houston Dynamo assistant Steve Ralston, former D.C. United manager Tom Soehn, U.S. U-15 head coach Hugo Perez, and Seattle assistant Brian Schmetzer.

A source stated that the continued uncertainty could see Dallas’ search continue for two more weeks.
