Donovan not set for Everton return

Everton’s hopes of bringing U.S. international Landon Donovan back to Goodison Park on loan appear to have been dashed, after LA Galaxy confirmed the midfielder will spend the next few weeks preparing for the new MLS season.

Donovan has had two loan spells at Everton.

Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena has stated he will not sanction a Premier League return for Donovan, who was a big hit in two previous short-term stints with Everton.

“Our players aren’t going anywhere,” Arena told the LA Galaxy podcast. “They had a full 11 months of playing and they need some time off.

“Even though we argue that the [off-season] layoff is going to be too long, he [Robbie Keane] can go into the camp with the U.S. team in January, as will Landon Donovan.

“Our players have had a really tough run this year, in particular Robbie [Keane] and Omar [Gonzalez] with all their requirements with their national teams.”

U.S. national team manager Jurgen Klinsmann has said he expects his MLS-based players to go on loan to Europe in January in preparation for next summer's World Cup. Donovan was the star of the U.S. squad at the 2010 World Cup, but a self-imposed sabbatical from the sport early in 2013 may have put his selection for Brazil in doubt.

The prospect of Republic of Ireland international Keane making a short-term loan move back to England in January ended when he had surgery on his Achilles tendon problem earlier this week and he is already looking forward to the new MLS season.

“I’m loving it in the States and there’s a lot of pressure when you go over there as one of the designated players,” Keane told Irish reporters last week.

“There’s a lot of pressure on your shoulders because the fans and players look up to you to do something in the game. If you’re playing in England, you’ve got 17 players around you on the same level.

“I’ve enjoyed everything about Galaxy so far. I’ve been scoring goals, playing some good football and was delighted to sign a new contract.”

Keane is in line to be named Most Valuable Player in the MLS for 2013 alongside Mike Magee of the Chicago Fire and Marco DiVaio of the Montreal Impact, with the winner of that accolade set to be revealed Dec. 5.
