Liverpool wait on Sturridge injury news

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge could be set for an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering an ankle injury in training on Friday.

Daniel Sturridge headed home in the 89th minute to salvage a point for Liverpool.

• Walsh: Christmas cheer

Sturridge, 24, was expected to return to the club’s starting line-up for the Premier League game against Hull on Sunday after starting on the substitutes’ bench for the 3-3 draw against Everton.

Manager Brendan Rodgers said that Sturridge had trained "exceptionally well" but the England international left the club’s Melwood training complex on crutches after twisting his ankle, amid reports that he has suffered ligament damage.

Liverpool now face an anxious wait to find out the severity of the damage, but will not get the results of a scan until later this weekend.

Sturridge was rested for the Merseyside derby last Saturday because of concerns from Rodgers about his fitness after he played 90 minutes in England’s 1-0 friendly defeat against Germany the Tuesday before

However, he came off the bench to score in that game and his form this season has seen him score 11 goals in 14 games across all competitions.

At Rodgers’ pre-match news conference on Friday, he said: "Daniel's certainly trained very hard this week. We've got another day to go to prepare and we'll see where all the players are at. I like to give all the players every chance to show that they can be in the team. He's worked exceptionally well, and when he does that, his qualities are there for everyone to see."

Asking if he was pleased with the way Sturridge responded to not starting against Everton, Rodgers added: "I think that's what good players do. Players will react differently. Some players, when they're not in the team, will shrivel and die. They have no fight.

"But the top players, when they're fighting for a place, show you every single day what they can do. And that's been the case with Daniel this week. He's been really determined, strong and aggressive, and looks ready for the weekend."

Rodgers, meanwhile, insists he has no concerns over Victor Moses' attitude after the winger declared that he needed more game time. Moses has started only five league matches since arriving on a season's loan from Chelsea, and told the Daily Mirror on Thursday: "I've always gone to places for the football - places where I'm going to play. By playing, you learn."

Rodgers, though, is adamant that Moses, 21, is content at Liverpool. He said: "The boy's been really happy here. Of course he wants to play. But the team have been doing very well, and the change in the structure of the team meant him coming out.

"Victor's a talent. He's very happy to be here, to be in the squad. He's a real good guy and wants to improve. I communicate with him regularly, which is why I know any headlines written about him were probably false.

"It's very unfair on him because he's never said a bad word about Liverpool since he's been here. He and all the other players have every opportunity to play, because I assess them in training and pick the team from that."
