Everton eye Donovan loan

Everton are considering a move to sign United States international Landon Donovan on loan for a third time in January.

Landon Donovan is keen to return to Everton
Landon Donovan is linked with another move to Goodison Park.

The LA Galaxy man had short spells on Merseyside in 2010 and 2012, when David Moyes was the manager at Goodison Park.

Moyes departed for Manchester United in the summer, but his replacement Roberto Martinez is interested in a short-term deal for Donovan, sources have told ESPN.

The 31-year-old would be available for Everton between the opening of the transfer window in January and the start of the Major League Soccer season in March.

Donovan told FIFA's website in May 2012, soon after the end of his second loan spell at Goodison, that he would be keen on a return to Everton.

He said at the time: "I would absolutely like to come back. There's no question about that. And I know I will be back at some point. Now, whether I'm back as a player or just as a fan, who knows?"

Meanwhile, Everton manager Roberto Martinez has admitted that he has no chance of signing Romelu Lukaku permanently at the end of his loan deal.

Lukaku, 20, moved to Merseyside for the season from Chelsea on Sept. 2.

And the Belgium international said in an interview for the BBC's Football Focus programme this week that he would consider staying beyond next summer if Everton qualified for the Champions League.

But Martinez accepts that he will not be able to keep Lukaku.

The manager told the Daily Mirror: "Every time I speak to Chelsea, they rate Romelu really highly, and I think that's always been the case.

"They made a massive investment on a player they always felt was going to take three, four, five years to be ready for them.

"He's important to us, but unfortunately in the modern game the best performers are more likely to move on -- you need to be constantly looking at how to keep the squad at the same level even if you have to always change with players.

"We'll find another one, don't worry. Everton didn't have Romelu last season and did well without him. I think it's always finding the way. That doesn't worry me.

"We have a good recruitment department at the club and that's where you need to be good at assembling squads together."
