Jones in awe of evergreen Giggs

Manchester United defender Phil Jones says teammate Ryan Giggs is an "inspiration" after witnessing the Welshman's 148th Champions League game.

United blew Bayer Leverkusen away in Germany on Wednesday, winning 5-0 against the side currently sitting second in the Bundesliga.

Evergreen Giggs extended his Champions League appearance record and put in a composed performance next to Jones in United’s midfield.

And Jones, who was born two years after Giggs made his debut for the Red Devils, says the veteran’s longevity continues to amaze him.

"He's incredible, he's one of the fittest players still in the team," Jones told ESPN. "He just keeps on going, keeps on running and keeps on putting in performances like that.

"He's an inspiration to any young footballer growing up. He's been there done it and worn the t-shirt several times over -- he's a great person to have around."

Jones was also full of praise for Wayne Rooney and Shinji Kagawa, who both turned in impressive displays at the BayArena.

"You can see what Wayne can do, he's a world class player," Jones said. "You can see when he plays like that tonight, he's unplayable.

"Shinji gets in those little pockets that are impossible to pick up, as a defender he's tough to play against -- you're not sure whether to go with him or not. He turns on a sixpence and keeps the ball well for us."

United booked their place in the last 16 with a game to spare, finishing as Group A winners in the process. And Jones insists the performance against Leverkusen shows United need not fear anyone in the next round.

"It's up there with the best European games I've played in," Jones said. "We put in a great performance at Real Madrid last season as well but this one's up there.  We dominated the game, we counter-attacked at speed -- we deserved the win as we were terrific tonight.

"Obviously, we're delighted to get through.  The Champions League is about world class teams and you've got to beat them if you want to get to the final and win it, so we’ll relish it whoever we get in the last 16."
