Platini museum targets record books

The ‘Temple of Michel Platini’ in Cyprus hopes to enter the record books for its 21,137 pieces of sporting memorabilia.

Philippos Stavrou Platini believes his collection of memorabilia is worth millions of euros.
Philippos Stavrou Platini believes his collection of memorabilia is worth millions of euros.

The museum, based in Mosfiloti near Larnaca, is dedicated to France legend and current UEFA president Michel Platini and could find a place in the Guinness World Records book.

A museum spokesperson told AFP: “A video tour of the museum was recorded on Sunday, which will be sent to the Guinness officials, along with all the paperwork, so the Platini museum can earn the title of the ‘largest collection of sporting memorabilia.’”

The museum’s owner is a huge fan of the three-time Ballon d’Or winner and has legally changed his name to Philippos Stavrou Platini.

“For me, Platini was the greatest of all time,” the 52-year-old told AP.

‘The Temple’ -- previously known as ‘The House of Michel Platini’ -- contains around 90 items signed by Platini, who has paid a visit to the museum, and the full collection was assembled at a cost of approximately 200,000 euros. The owner claims the items' value is now in the millions.
