Small expectations for new Syd FC striker

Sydney FC boss Frank Farina has moved to dampen early expectations on new striker Ranko Despotovic after the former Serbian international linked up with his new teammates this week.

Despotovic joins the Sky Blues with high hopes he can increase their potency up front with criticism their attack is too dependent upon Italian superstar Alessandro Del Piero.

However, Farina said he wouldn't rush him into his starting side for the clash with Wellington Phoenix on Saturday at Allianz Stadium.

"Obviously we brought him here to score goals but we can't expect too much early on," Farina said.

"He won't start. We will make a decision prior to kick off whether he will sit on the bench but there is every chance.

"There is no need to rush him at the moment. We want to let him settle in and not to take any risks.

"He looks good fitness-wise and conditioning-wise. He obviously looks after himself very well.

"He has done everything asked of him in training so far but he is going to take time to settle in.

"When he does hopefully he can have a great run and play a big part for us and score some goals."

The 30-year-old Despotovic has represented Serbia four times including in their 0-0 draw with the Socceroos in Melbourne in 2011.

He joined Sydney from J-League club Urawa Red Diamonds and said he had fitted into life and training in Sydney better than expected.

"My first impressions of the club are really good. It is fantastic to be here," he said.

"I am hopeful this year we can fight for the championship. It is because of that I am here.

"There are some young players here and some stars, so there are no excuses.

"I am here to prove myself.

"Sydney play a good brand of fighting football. Hopefully I can score some goals and be a part of that."

Sydney are chasing their third straight win after victories over Melbourne Victory and Melbourne Heart as they find some early-season momentum following a slow first month.

Farina also hosed down media speculation linking the Sky Blues to off contract Western Sydney Wanderers playmaker Youssouf Hersi.

"I saw that in the paper this morning and that's the first I have heard of it," he said.
