Jack Wilshere fears missing World Cup

Jack Wilshere has said he is “definitely not” assured of a place in England’s World Cup squad and fears he could lose his place to the likes of Ravel Morrison.

Cross: Handle Wilshere with care

Wilshere, 21, has long been touted as one of England’s brightest prospects but the Arsenal midfielder has struggled to produce his best form this season after suffering a series of injuries in recent years.

He continues to feature regularly under England boss Roy Hodgson, but Wilshere believes the emergence of young midfield talents like West Ham’s Morrison could cost him his place in Brazil.

“I'm definitely not nailed on for the squad,” he told the media. “You have seen over the last couple of months the talent there is, even in the under-21s. With Ravel Morrison and all these players coming through, you are never guaranteed [to go] and cannot rest on your laurels.”

He added: “You are only as good as your last game, they say, so when the time comes, I have to be on top form, and there will be a lot of players looking to be as well.

“There are some big games coming up for the club at the moment, so I am just concentrating on that. That is where you are going to get into the England World Cup squad -- by playing well for your club, then you are going to get picked for your country.”

However, Wilshere may miss the Gunners’ Premier League meeting with third-placed Southampton on Saturday after picking up an ankle injury while playing for England against Germany.

The Daily Mirror and Daily Mail both report that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is unhappy that Hodgson fielded Wilshere in both Friday’s 2-0 loss to Chile and Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Germany despite a request to limit him to one appearance.

He now faces a fitness test ahead of the weekend as a result of the injury he picked up when challenged by Germany’s Sidney Sam.
