Axel Witsel eyes Premier League move

Zenit St Petersburg midfielder Axel Witsel has said he sees his future in the Premier League and hopes to join a club like Chelsea or Manchester United one day.

Axel Witsel signed for Zenit from Benfica
Axel Witsel wants to play in the Premier League.

Witsel joined the Russian club from Benfica in the summer of 2012 for a fee of 40 million euros.

However, the 24-year-old said he is envious of his colleagues in the Belgium side who are plying their trade in England and is hopeful that he will soon attract attention from the Premier League’s elite.

Witsel told Sportwereld: "I hope for a big club. I also see my teammates playing at teams like Chelsea or Manchester United but it doesn’t worry me a bit.

“There will come a day when one of those clubs will show interest and I can leave.

“My preference goes out to the Premier League. Not because half the national team is playing there, but because the competition is the most watched."

United signed Witsel’s Belgium teammate Marouane Fellaini from Everton in the summer, while Chelsea own three of his countrymen in Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, who has been loaned to Everton.

Witsel, who also played alongside Fellaini for Standard Liege before joining Benfica, was linked with Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco in the summer.
