QPR could be fined £60m - report

Queens Park Rangers could be fined 60 million pounds by the Football League in January 2015 if they secure promotion this season, the Mail on Sunday reports.

Harry Redknapp's QPR side are currently third in the Championship.

Crace: Redknapp autobiography review

The paper believes QPR are likely to post losses of around 80 million pounds for the 2012-13 season, during which an array of highly paid players such as Chris Samba, Julio Cesar, Loic Remy and Jermaine Jenas were unable to prevent the club’s relegation from the Premier League. Many high earners remain on the books despite the club now being in the Championship.

Under financial fair play rules introduced by the Football League, clubs are set to pay a one pound fine for every pound they lose over 18 million pounds over the course of the 2013-14 season, so -- should the losses be of a similar level for the current campaign -- QPR could expect to pay around 60 million pounds if they were promoted. If they fail to return to the top flight, they may instead face the prospect of a transfer embargo.

QPR declined to comment on the status of their accounts for 2012-13 or 2013-14 when contacted by the Mail.

A Football League spokesman told the newspaper: “This is the first season in which clubs will ultimately face sanctions [for over-spending]. Clubs have to submit their accounts for 2013-14 to us by Dec. 1, 2014, with sanctions levied early in 2015. If a club being sanctioned are in the Premier League by then, the fine will need to be paid.”

The Mail reports that any funds raised from fines will be donated to charity.

QPR owner Tony Fernandes later took to his Twitter account to say the story was inaccurate.

He wrote: "QPR fans please ignore Article. Shows how big our brand has become that people need to write stories that are just not accurate Stay focused on getting back to the premier league."
