Tim Howard wants concussion rethink

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has told NBC he would never want to be put in the same situation as Tottenham counterpart Hugo Lloris -- who played on after being knocked out at Goodison Park.

• Marcotti: Lloris' health

The United States international, 34, has called for a tightening of the rules on concussion injuries after Lloris played on despite suffering a head injury in a collision with Romelu Lukaku during a 0-0 Premier League draw on Nov. 3.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas was criticised by both the English and world players’ unions for allowing his goalkeeper to continue.

And Everton boss Roberto Martinez subsequently argued that the rules should be changed to take such a decision out of the hands of a manager.

Howard -- in Glasgow with his United States colleagues preparing for Friday’s friendly against Scotland -- has backed Martinez, saying that there is no way he would want to play on after being knocked out.

The keeper told NBC: “I would hope that if I was knocked out in the game that my medical staff wouldn’t have given me the option, that they would’ve taken me off.

“I think it’s important that UEFA, FIFA, governing bodies, whoever, make the guidelines more stringent. It takes the guess work out of it and it takes decisions out of people’s hands.

“I think if you look at how American sports have dealt with concussions and all the disastrous information that have come out in studies about post-concussion, yeah, there needs to be a precedent set through the governing bodies.

“A simple, ‘hey are you all good?’ and a thumbs up... it’s not enough. It’s important that the governing bodies, as they have in American sport, make the laws so stringent because we know the repercussions of letting players play on, whether they’ve been knocked out or have concussions. We realise how bad concussions are.”
