Steven Cherundolo open to MLS transfer

Hannover captain Steven Cherundolo has told ESPN that he would be open to a transfer to the MLS when his contract ends in the summer.

However, the 34-year-old is currently focused on making a playing return and has said no firm decision will be made until May.

Cherundolo returned to the Hannover squad for the 0-0 draw against Eintracht Braunschweig last Friday. The longest-serving current Bundesliga player, who has been with the club since January 1999, has been restricted to just five appearances in 2013 because of a knee injury.

He is set to return to the Hannover team in a test match against second tier club FC St. Pauli on Thursday, and he has said he is ready to make a playing return to the side he has captained since 2010.

"I don’t think there are too many jobs that are better. I love what I do, I love being part of this team and I also have a responsibility to the team," he said.

"I was made captain again this season. It’s not also my job or duty to get back on the field it’s also fun for me. I enjoy a challenge and it is challenging: 34 years of age, having three surgeries, finding that motivation to make it back on the field.

"I see it as challenge, one I am very close to overcoming. There were times when my knee wasn’t getting any better and neither the doctors nor I had any idea or way of going about the future. Now the only thing left is sharpening my skills again and getting match fitness."

United States international Cherundolo is battling to be fit in time for the 2014 World Cup, should he make it, he would play his fourth straight World Cup.

"If Juergen [Klinsmann] seems to think that I can make the team better nothing will make me happier than joining," he added.

Under contract at Hannover until 2014, the right-back will not rule out to return to the States to end his career in the MLS.

"It’s always something that I am interested in. I follow the league, it is a great little league," Cherundolo said.

"Good friends have moved back home recently. Carlos Bocanegra is there and has wonderful things to say about the league. And obviously playing at home is something much different from anything we’ve been used to. We spent our whole careers away from home.

"It’s something that definitely interests me. It’s a decision I will make in May."
