Olsen: Nicklas Bendtner needs to move

Denmark boss Morten Olsen feels Nicklas Bendtner must find a new club in January after failing to break into the Arsenal team.

Nicklas Bendtner has made seven appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season.
Nicklas Bendtner has made seven appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season.

Bendtner, 25, returned to Arsenal in the summer after two years out on loan at Sunderland and Juventus but, despite the Gunners’ lack of attacking options, he has barely featured.

The Dane has expressed his disappointment in recent days at Arsene Wenger’s refusal to grant him a transfer in the summer, and Olsen -- whose Denmark side failed to qualify for the 2014 World Cup -- says he must find a new club in January for the good of his career.

“Bendtner scored two great goals for us in the game against Italy, but there were things he was lacking in the contest, and that only comes about through playing games,” Olsen said, according to Reuters. “For that reason, he should find himself something new this winter.”

Asked if he had recommended that he moves on, Olsen said: “I think he has recommended that to himself, and that’s the main thing. Footballers want to play football. He has maybe 10 years left, so he must see to it that he uses them well.

“It is about having that urge to say to yourself that you’ve had a good career. It’s about being able to say to yourself when you’re 34 or 35 years old that you’ve played football while being a professional and earning some money -- but it is mostly about playing football.

“He must find a club where he plays all the time. It’s not so much about playing in European competition and so on -- if he’s good enough, he can play in the national team.”

Bendtner, whose Arsenal contract expires at the end of the season, is currently doubtful for Friday’s friendly with Norway as a result of a virus.
