Brazilian club Fluminense have sacked coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo as the defending champions fight to survive the relegation battle.
The Rio de Janeiro club currently sits in 18th position on the Brazilian Serie A ladder and has only five games left to survive the drop.
And despite former Brazil national team manager Luxemburgo only being in the job since replacing Abel Braga in July, Fluminense officials believe drastic action was needed to save the club’s season.
“On the decision of club president Peter Siemsen, coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo will not continue in his role as coach of Fluminense,” read a statement on the club's official website.
“Fluminense appreciates the efforts of the coach and his coaching staff.”
