Promising St Etienne defender Kurt Zouma has been given a ten-game ban after breaking an opponent's leg last weekend.
Zouma, 19, was sent off after a tackle on Sochaux midfielder Thomas Guerbert left the player with a broken lower leg and dislocated ankle.
While Guerbert, 24, faces up to six months out, Zouma will now not be able to play for his club until late January following the ruling by the French Football League's Disciplinary Commission.
Guerbert had told L'Equipe on Thursday that Zouma should be given a significant punishment.
"If he gets one match or 30, what does it change for me? It needs to be a fair punishment. If he gets four games, it leaves the door open to that kind of challenge,” he said.
"He's going to be punished and we'll have to accept it," St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier had said in the wake of the goalless draw, while Les Verts president Roland Romeyer revealed the ten-time champions had sent a letter of apology to Guerbert and that Zouma would visit the Sochaux player.
