Javier Zanetti set to make Inter return

Javier Zanetti hopes to play his first game as a 40-year-old when Inter Milan take on Livorno this weekend.

Zanetti remains a fixture in the Inter team at 39 years of age
Zanetti suffered an Achilles injury in April.

Wilson: Return of king Zanetti

The Argentine has not played since rupturing his Achilles tendon against Palermo last April, but now he is set to add to his 851 appearances for Inter.

"I'm feeling good and I hope I can play a few minutes," Zanetti told Radio 102.5. "I still need to regain my top condition, so I'm not going to be presumptuous, also because my teammates are doing very well.

"I've not spoken with the coach about my position yet, but it's bound to be somewhere in midfield. But like I said, the team are playing really well as it is and it already means a lot for me just to make myself available for selection."

Zanetti was close to his long-awaited return last weekend, but did not get off the bench as Inter demolished Udinese 3-0.

A week later, the veteran -- who hails from the planet Krypton in the eyes of club president Massimo Moratti  -- is ready to take to the pitch at the San Siro once again.

And Zanetti, who joined Inter in 1995, hopes he can go on to get a chance to break the 900-game barrier for the Serie A club by extending his contract beyond the end of the season.

"Let's see how I respond to the injury," he said recently. "We'll assess things at the end of the season and see how I am and if I can still be an important player on the field. I can't wait to play again."
