AC Milan is off to its worst start in 31 years, having secured just 12 points in 11 Serie A games and currently sitting in 12th place. While competitors Juventus, Napoli and Roma have spent significantly to strengthen their squads, Milan fans are now hopeful that their club can scrape together a berth in next season’s Europa League.
In fairness, Milan has been accustomed to a slow start in domestic competition. Last season, the club earned just 11 points from its first 10 games, before needing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Siena on the last match day to secure a Champions League position. This year, a combination of injuries and suspensions has left Milan without star forward Mario Balotelli, Stephan El Shaarawy and Kaka for certain stretches of the season. But even without those players, there is little excuse for a club with so much talent and prestige to fall so far, so quickly.
With Milan in real danger of missing out on European competition, two questions need to be asked: What is wrong with this team, and can it be fixed?
