Rodgers: Reds 'playing catch-up'

Brendan Rodgers admitted Liverpool are already “playing catch-up” after the Reds succumbed to Premier League leaders Arsenal on Saturday.

• Usher: Rodgers must resist urge for wholesale change
• Delaney: Three Things: Arsenal vs. Liverpool

The Gunners moved five points clear after the first 10 rounds of the competition after disposing of nearest rivals, Liverpool, 2-0 at Emirates Stadium.

And the Gunner’s strong start to season has left Rodgers regretting the Reds’ missed opportunities to stay close to their north London rivals.

“(Arsenal) are winning the race,” Rodgers said.

“These 10 games we've all played, people talk about it being early, but you don't get them back.

“You don't get to play them again so you've got to claim the points.

“At the moment we're on 20 points and they're on 25.

“The great thing is there's lots of time left to gain those points back, but at this moment in time they are high in confidence, playing well and they will be pleased with the win.

“But listen, they're a team here, I watched them (Arsenal) against Napoli and they were brilliant, and that's top-end Champions League.

“They are a very good side with very good players, and for us we're playing catch-up.

“There's always disappointment when you lose a big game. We were happy when we beat Manchester United earlier in the season.”

However, Rodgers believes his squad’s has also had a positive start to the season and that, with more investment, could challenge for honours towards the end of the campaign.

“After 10 games there's always a good assessment of where you can go,” Rodgers said. “(And) I think we've had a terrific start.

“So for us to be where we are, that's where we want to be, we've shown that we're going to have a fighting chance.

“We want to stay there. We know we're trying to build something here in the depth of our squad, and the nature of our game.

“Look at Chelsea's squad, at Arsenal's squad even with the players who are out, and look at Manchester City's.

“Without a major investment that just takes a bit of time.

“I can only be positive with what I've got, because they've given me everything.”
