Inzaghi regrets Zlatan Ibrahimovic sale

Filippo Inzaghi believes he would still be playing if Zlatan Ibrahimovic had not been sold by AC Milan to Paris Saint-Germain.

Filippo Inzaghi scored twice against Liverpool in 2007 Champions League final
Filippo Inzaghi scored 156 Serie A goals during his playing career.

Paul: Kaka magic not enough

Inzaghi, 40, retired in May 2012 to pursue a coaching career and is currently in charge of Milan’s under-19s.

However, the former Italy international says he still regrets the decision made by Rossoneri coach Massimiliano Allegri to sell the Sweden international in 2012, with whom he enjoyed an “incredible feeling”.

“Maybe that’s my only remorse, not having played more alongside Ibrahmovic towards the end of my career with Milan,” Inzaghi told Mediaset Premium Calcio.  “We had an incredible feeling -- he was delighted when I scored and I think we were made to play together and be a strike partnership.

“In truth, it was never possible, and we all know why, but it certainly was a shame. If I’d been able to play alongside Ibra on a regular basis, maybe I’d still be playing now. But that’s how things are. My dream now is to coach Milan and stay here for the rest of my career. If that’s not possible, I’ll just have to deal with it.”

While not partnering the PSG striker more frequently is Inzaghi’s biggest disappointment, scoring important goals in major finals is something he looks back on fondly.

“I’ve scored five goals in the most important three finals, and we won all of them,” he said. “That’s something not even [Lionel] Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo have managed, and it’s a record I’m proud of.”

Two of those goals came in the 2007 Champions League final win with revenge against Liverpool, but Inzaghi admits it was touch-and-go whether he would even play in that game.

“It was very difficult in 2007,” Inzaghi said. “I was out for a long time after an ankle operation in Antwerp, then when I returned, I was not at my best, of course.

"On the eve of that final in Athens, [then Milan coach Carlo] Ancelotti did not know whether to play me or [Alberto] Gilardino. I played and I scored two, then I scored against Sevilla in the UEFA Supercup, and then I got two against Boca Juniors in the World Club Cup.

"But I actually feel our 2003 [Champions League] victory, won on a penalty shootout against Juventus, is more mine. I scored something like 12 or 13 goals that year, starting in the qualifiers against Slovan [Liberec], and I never stopped.”
