Yallop poised to be named Fire manager

Frank Yallop is set to be named the new manager of the Chicago Fire, multiple sources have confirmed to ESPNFC.com.

Yallop's imminent hiring comes just a day after Frank Klopas was let go as the Fire's manager, and just four months after he parted company with the San Jose Earthquakes. Goal.com first reported Yallop's hiring.

Klopas' departure was part of a management purge by Fire owner Andrew Hauptman with Chicago's President of Soccer Operations Javier Leon also on his way out.

Yallop is a two-time MLS Coach of the Year, who won two MLS Cups and one Supporters Shield in two different stints with the Earthquakes. He has also spent time as manager of Canada's national team and the Los Angeles Galaxy. His career record in MLS stands at 158-141-99.

Previous reports stated that Hauptman was looking for one person to handle both the general manager and head coaching duties, much along the lines of Bruce Arena's role with the Los Angeles Galaxy. It is not clear as of yet if Yallop will take on both roles with Chicago.

The move will no doubt come as a surprise to the Vancouver Whitecaps, who after announcing the departure of Martin Rennie on Tuesday, admitted that Yallop was one of the candidates that they were pursuing. Given that Vancouver President Bob Lenarduzzi coached Yallop when the two were with the Canadian national team, it seemed logical that Yallop would join the Whitecaps. Now it appears that the Fire have caught Vancouver by surprise and taken away their prime candidate right under their noses.

The Fire is expected to make an announcement on Thursday.
