Schweinsteiger eyes UCL history

Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger has his sights on lifting the Champions League trophy again this season.

• Schaaf: A pair of Marios get it done for Bayern

It would be the first time a club has defended the European title since the introduction of Champions League in the 1992-93 season.

Bayern hope to end the pattern in the competition, which has seen several great teams fail to defend their title.

Milan in 1995, Ajax in 1996 and Juventus in 1997 were all denied in the final, while Barcelona under Pep Guardiola twice failed to make it into the final.

After two final defeats in three years, Bayern were finally able to lift the Champions League trophy for the second time since 2001 -- and they have begun their defence with a 100 percent record in Group D.

Speaking to Sport1 on Tuesday, Bayern midfielder Schweinsteiger, 29, said the current Bayern squad has all the makings to overcome the Champions League curse.

“I still have great goals with Bayern,” Schweinsteiger said. “We’ve achieved everything domestically, but to achieve what no team has ever done -– to defend the Champions League title. Now, with our new coach, it is entirely possible to defend the title."

Looking further into the future, Schweinsteiger said that he has always given his all for Bayern and plans to do so for a long time to come. “It is difficult to predict what will be in three years’ time,” he added.

In the long-term, Schweinsteiger joked that he could envisage Thomas Mueller, Philipp Lahm and himself replacing the current Bayern board.

“It would be quite funny, if, in 30 years’ time, Philipp Lahm, Thomas Mueller and I were in charge of Bayern instead of Uli Hoeness and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge,” he said. “Thomas [Mueller] would do the talking and Philipp and I would make the calls.”
