Hannover have apologised for falsely claiming that Steven Cherundolo’s delayed return to action was down to injury.

United States international Cherundolo, 34 was expected to make his first appearance of the 2013-14 season against Hoffenheim on Saturday after struggling with knee problems.
His absence from the Hannover squad was put down to lower back problems but it has now emerged that the club forgot to apply for the mandatory player licence needed.
"In an extraordinary situation we have unanimously made the wrong decision," the club’s press officer Alex Jacob explained on Monday. “We decided for a version that more that deviated from the truth."
Jacob said that the decision, taken by sporting director Dirk Dufner, coach Mirko Slomka and himself, was made to avoid supporter unrest.
But club president Martin Kind was not happy with the sequence of events, telling Neue Presse Hannover: "The policy is clear. Either you say nothing or you come up with the real facts."
