Marseille president backs Elie Baup

Marseille president Labrune Vincent has backed coach Elie Baup after the club suffered a shock 3-2 home defeat to Reims.

Elie Baup endured a day to forget as Marseille lost to Reims.

Ligue 1 review

The reverse was Marseille's fifth straight loss in all competitions, dropping them to sixth in Ligue 1, where they are already seven points off the pace of Paris St Germain, who play their game in hand against St Etienne on Sunday.

Vincent appeared alongside sporting director Jose Anigo to address reporters after the match and said Baup retained his faith.

“We are together and together we will find solutions to get out of this,” Vincent said in comments reported by L'Equipe.

Anigo added: “The players retain their trust. We have a big job to do with them. [Baup] is supported by everyone, and we have a constant dialogue. He must be able to work calmly.”

Vincent said that he had seen positive signs in Marseille's performance, despite their defeat, which came through a late Prince Oniangue header after Marseille's Florian Thauvin and Andre-Pierre Gignac had cancelled out a first-half strike from Mads Albaek and a Saber Khelifa own-goal.

“This is a game which sums up the period we are in now, both in its content and the result,” Vincent said. “But in the content, things were not so bad. The movement in offence was better.

“We have shown some of the things we need to do to win, but on the other hand there were obvious errors in the three goals. This is a period which is not easy and no doubt that has affected the players.

“At this time we should not feel sorry for ourselves, but we must appeal for the solidarity of the players and the staff so that we can lift ourselves against Rennes next week.”

The mood of those players was clear from their own post-match comments.

“It is extremely bad,” midfielder Souleymane Diawara said. “We wanted to believe we had done things the hard way in getting back to 2-2 but that goal killed us.”

However, captain Steve Mandanda said the group would stand together.

“We all realise we are in a difficult situation,” he said. “We all need to be more committed and stand together. But I believe in this team.”
