Moratti set to remain as Inter president

Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has said he is likely to remain in his role despite the club's recent takeover.

Marcotti: Inter's Massimo Moratti the last of Europe's 'fan' owners

Indonesian media mogul Erick Thohir and two partners purchased 70 percent of the Serie A club from Moratti last week, but the 68-year-old says he is likely to continue as the club’s president, in spite of his minority share in the club.

“When you’re so used to a certain role, it’s hard to take on a different one,” Moratti told Inter Channel. “We’re talking with these people and they are kindly asking me to remain as president. We’ll see.

“I don’t think I have any right to say that I will be remaining forever because Inter have a great history and they must continue to have one with whomever has the good intentions to take ownership of this club.”

Thohir and Co. have those intentions, according to Moratti, who has reaffirmed his belief that the club is being placed in good hands with the Indonesian investor.

Although Thohir says he will probably only be in Italy four times a year, that does not mean he will not be close to his new club, and Moratti is more than satisfied with the impression he has made during negotiations and since taking control of the Nerazzurri.

“Thohir is a relaxed, kind and uncomplicated person,” Moratti said. “He’s ambitious and works hard. He has a group behind him who can give a lot. Anyway, it was hard to find an Italian partner because nobody stepped forward. This way, the number of fans throughout the world will grow.

“They may not have lived 50 years of Inter history, but when you are president, you soon become a fan, given all the suffering. The only potential difficulty for them is being distant, but they are Interisti and are sensitive enough to understand what this club is.”

Thohir has already made it clear that he will not be revolutionising the club, at least not in terms of the playing staff, and that he hopes to find the right blend of young, Italian players with a few big names.

One of those names could have been Lionel Messi, but Moratti said it is always going to be impossible to convince him to join from Barcelona, having tried already.

“We couldn’t pull off a move like the one for Ronaldo,” he said. “We tried with Messi, but to be honest, he’s so attached to Barcelona, who helped him when he was not well. When I saw Messi for the first time, he was still a lad and I told him he was really strong and he’s never forgotten -- now and again, he sends me a signed shirt.”
