David Moyes satisfied with victory

Manchester United manager David Moyes claimed his side's 1-0 win against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford was "a good job done", yet he was frustrated that his side did not kill off their opponents in the Champions League Group A clash with a second goal.

• Okwonga: Encouraging signs

Moyes opted to rest striker Robin van Persie from the clash against the Spanish visitors and that decision could have back-fired if Sociedad had snatched a late leveller, but there was relief all round for United as the final whistle sounded.

"It was a good performance and we could have scored more goals, we should have in fact," Moyes told Sky Sports.

"We had the situation on Saturday [against Southampton] when we were 1-0 up and lost a goal in the last minute, so today we had that feeling around us. If we had scored five or six today, it wouldn't have been out of place.

"I was concerned that we gave away a few free-kicks around the box, but we had to win the game at home and we did so."

Moyes reserved special praise for striker Wayne Rooney, who responded to the furore surrounding the comments made him by about Sir Alex Ferguson in his autobiography with a typically feisty display.

"He was absolutely terrific tonight, he was great," enthused Moyes. "I was shouting at him a few times for giving the ball away in the corner in the last five minutes, but overall he played really well.

"We just want a top player like Wayne to play well and he is playing well. I said from day one his training was great, I thought he was in really good shape. We trained him hard to get him as good as we could and we want to see that all the time. The supporters are happy with the form he is in, that's for sure."

Rooney joined Moyes in hailing the United victory, as they bounced back  from the disappointment of a 1-1 home draw against Southampton last weekend to established a strong position at the top of their Champions League group.

"It could have been three, four or five nil even, but I'm happy we got the win," said Rooney. "It was important after the result on Saturday and we fully deserved it I thought. We played some great stuff.

"We defended well. A clean sheet is always pleasing and we created a lot of chances. On another day, we will take those chances and win the game more comfortably, but the three points are all important."
