Postecoglou appointed Australia coach

Australia have appointed Ange Postecoglou as their new head coach, following the sacking of Holger Osiek earlier this month.

Football Federation Australia have named Ange Postecoglou as the new Socceroos coach.

Ange Postecoglou took over at Brisbane Roar in 2009
Postecoglou will see Australia through to the 2018 World Cup.

• Brooks: Postecoglou's challenge

The Melbourne Victory boss has agreed terms on a five-year deal to take over the reigns of the national team, seeing him through to the 2018 World Cup.

Postecoglou said he was "enormously grateful" to be given the opportunity to lead his country to next year’s World Cup and beyond.

“When your country calls you answer,” Postecoglou told reporters at FFA headquarters in Sydney. “I am looking forward to the days ahead and the years ahead.

“I understand the enormity of the challenge, I understand where we currently sit and what needs to be done and it’s got all the key factors that I look for (in a job).

“I love a good challenge and this is certainly one of those.

“My hope and my belief is that we can restore pride to our national team and national team jersey. I still think our national team, the Socceroos, are the flag bearers of our code.

‘There is plenty of work to be done obviously, but I’m enormously grateful for the opportunity.

“I plan for the next five years, hopefully longer, to put my heart and soul by making sure our national team represent our code and our country proudly.”

Postecoglou admitted there would be changes to the Socceroos but denied that past results would create preconceptions around certain players.

“I got my ideas about how I want the team to play and I got my ideas about how I want the environment structured,” he said.

“And then will find out who fits into that. I’m not going there with a target or a hit-list of people, that’s not the way I work. And sometimes people surprise you.

“I want to get the best out of every player available and I certainly don’t discount anyone from that.

“But will there be changes? Of course there will, because I’ve got my own way of doing things and whenever that happens, there are changes to personnel and the way we operate.”

However, the dual A-League championship winning coach did suggest the national team would undergo a generational revamp under his tenure.

“I’ve got an enormous belief in our young players,” Postecoglou said.  “I’ve never been let down by throwing young players in, and you never really find out until you give them the opportunity and I plan to do that.

“The two-fold challenge of the job in the short term will be to make sure we have our best possible team for Brazil but also, I think we need to expose some of our younger players to international football and find out who can and can’t play at that level.

“What I’ve always found out is that they never let you down but sometimes they surprise you, and I really believe that we might be able to unearth one or two young players who can have a major impact on our side for years to come. “

Postecoglou will have the chance to meet his new charges for the first time when the Socceroos play Costa Rica on November 19.

"First things first is I'll get stuck into the job," he replied when asked when he will talk to the current Socceroos squad. "We've got a squad announcement coming up very shortly and that will be my first task.

"I'm not a big text guy or a twitter guy, so I’d rather do it face to face. I'll wait till people come in and I'll have a good chat to everyone.”
