French defender Gallas in Glory's sights

Perth Glory is on the verge of signing former Chelsea and Arsenal defender William Gallas, according to reports.

Gallas is on the lookout for a new club after being released by English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season.

In August, Gallas' agent Pierre Frelot said the 36-year-old Frenchman was interested in a move to Australia's A-League.

And it seems Perth Glory have won the race for his signature, with The West Australian reporting that an official announcement could be made as early as Wednesday.

The arrival of Gallas would be a huge boost to the A-League, which enjoyed a spike in popularity last season following the arrivals of veteran international stars Alessandro Del Piero, Shinji Ono and Emile Heskey.

Perth Glory hope Gallas' arrival would help spark renewed interest in the club, which has struggled to regularly attract big crowds since the inception of the A-League.

The arrival of former Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler helped attract new fans during the 2010-11 campaign, and Gallas' arrival could do the same.

The ninth-placed Glory will play their first home game of the season on Sunday when they host Melbourne Heart at nib Stadium.

Defender Josh Risdon will miss the clash with a knee injury, while star striker Shane Smeltz is still recovering from a hip operation.
