Keane hits back at Ferguson over book

Roy Keane has hit back at his former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after he was singled out for especially fierce treatment by the Scot in his autobiography.

•  Fergie rejected England twice
'Ozil wasn't on radar'
'Beckham got too big'
'Rafa made rivalry personal'
•  Moyes unworried by revelations

Ferguson proved a withering assessment of Keane in his memoirs and predicted that his words would inspire a feisty response from the Irishman who won seven Premier League titles under his command.

Now Keane has answered that call, as he used his appearance as a TV pundit on Tuesday evening to suggest Ferguson has betrayed the players who helped to bring him so much success during his 26-year reign as United manager.

"I’m okay, I’m quite relaxed about it, but I do remember having conversations with the manager when I was at the club about loyalty and, in my opinion, I don’t think he knows the meaning of the word,” a feisty Keane told ITV Sport.

"It doesn’t bother me too much what he has to say about me but to constantly criticise other players at the club who brought him a lot of success, I find very, very strange, but I won’t be losing any sleep over it. I just don’t think the manager needs to do it.

"I don’t know how many books he’s written now, but he has to draw the line eventually to say listen these players have been all top servants to Man Utd. A lot of these players helped the manager win lots of trophies. Imagine if we’d never won a trophy what he would have said.

"We brought success to the club, we gave it everything we had when we were there, but, as I said, it’s just part of modern life now, people like to do books and criticise their ex-players.”

Keane released his own controversial autobiography back in 2002 and was often touted as a possible successor to Ferguson as United manager, but it now seems the duo’s relationship broke down completely in the Irish midfielder’s final few months at Old Trafford.
