Poyet wants Black Cats character

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has said he wants to select a team of strong characters for the weekend’s Wear-Tyne derby against Newcastle.

Gus Poyet takes to the sidelines at Swansea for his first game as Sunderland boss.
Poet's Sunderland reign got off to a nightmare start at Swansea.

Poyet saw the Black Cats crash to a 4-0 defeat at Swansea in his first game in charge, keeping them at the bottom of the Premier League table with only one point so far this season, and is desperate to secure a win as soon as possible.

He said he was keen to establish consistency in his team selection after Sunderland named their fifth different defensive combination of the season in Wales.

The Sunderland line-up is likely to change again, with defender Wes Brown and on-loan midfielder Ki Sung-Yeung -- who was ineligible to face parent club Swansea -- back in contention.

And Poyet said he was looking for strong characters as he prepared to welcome Newcastle, telling the Sunderland Echo: “I need to pick the team that is good enough to do it with my ideas.

“I’m responsible, I’m picking the team. We need strong characters to go in there and react to adversity.

“At this moment in time, when we’re going back to basics, it’s important to have players in their natural positions. Last week, I was asking a few players who’ve been in different positions about where they feel comfortable, where is natural for them.

“There are so many things that you can do in training that you get a chance to see things. We see the things that are important to us and then make a decision about players.”
