A-League: Mariners move to second spot Video

Mariner Flores a danger, say Adelaide Utd

Adelaide United defender Nigel Boogaard has earmarked former teammate Marcos Flores as the dangerman in Saturday's A-League clash against Central Coast Mariners.

But he says Flores won't be targeted for special attention as the Reds embrace the philosophies of new coach Josep Gombau.

The Spaniard has ordered Adelaide players to concentrate on themselves, and employ his attacking game-plan, rather than overly worry about the opposition.

"The emphasis each week, and the way Josep wants to go about things, is to concentrate on what we need to do," Boogaard told reporters on Tuesday.

"And if we can take control of what we do, and do what he wants, then the emphasis is more on us as opposed to worrying about the opposition."

Flores won the Johnny Warren Medal in 2010/11 when playing for Adelaide, but has since moved to Melbourne Victory and now Central Coast.

"He (Flores) is their dangerman, when he has got time and space on the ball, he'll create things," Boogaard said.

"But I don't think we'll go out and target anyone individually, I don't think we'll do that all year. It will be key for us just to concentrate on what we're doing."

Boogaard hoped to return for Adelaide's away match against the Mariners, his former club, after serving a suspension for a red card in the season opener.

The experienced defender looms as a replacement for full-back Daniel Bowles, who will be sidelined for about seven weeks after tearing ankle ligaments in last Friday night's 2-2 draw against Melbourne Victory.

The Reds again will be without attacking midfielder Marcelo Carrusca, expected to miss another fortnight with a groin strain after being a late withdrawal from the Victory match.
