Martinez tips Barry for England recall

Roberto Martinez has urged England manager Roy Hodgson to take Everton loanee midfielder Gareth Barry to next year’s World Cup.

Barry, 32, has made an impressive start at Goodison Park since arriving from Manchester City in a season-long loan deal on Sept. 2.

But he has not played for England since May 2012, when he suffered a groin injury during Hodgson’s first match in charge -- a 1-0 friendly win over Norway.

The veteran midfielder missed Euro 2012 as a result of the injury, and was then unable to force his way back into the international set-up after losing his place at City.

Hodgson named three Everton players in his squad for the recent World Cup qualifying wins over Montenegro and Poland -- left-back Leighton Baines, centre-back Phil Jagielka and midfielder Ross Barkley.

But Martinez believes Barry’s experience could be useful in Brazil next summer.

The Everton manager told the Daily Mirror: “I see Gareth as a very, very valuable option for England. What he brings on to the pitch is very difficult to find.

“There are few players who can bring that experience, that know-how, that tactical awareness, and he will always be a man who can offer a lot to the national team.

“Whether that’s needed in the World Cup or not depends on circumstances, but often it is. And Gareth has such high standards in everything he does, we will see a very important player for Everton.

“When you get to work with someone who’s played over 500 Premier League games, you know they don’t need any extra motivation to be at their best.

"The standards he brings on a daily basis are incredible, and that quality is something you admire as a coach, because he offers it on a daily basis.”
